STATEMENT
I strive to capture the Uncanny; the sensation of estrangement that arises when something familiar becomes alienating. This unease underlies our perception of societal constructs, suppressed histories, and an uncertain future.
The practice is rooted in a fascination with imagery that stands against time’s ruination, questioning how places, artifacts, and fleeting moments accumulate meaning. This interest stems from a childhood spent near the ocean in the south of Portugal, where the vastness of the sea evoked both awe and insignificance. That early sense of scale, feeling at once grounded and adrift, shaped my understanding of place and displacement, anchoring my work in a search for connection across the metaphysical and psychological distances.
The materiality of the paint merged with collected sand acts as a ritual that embeds a fragment of ‘in situ’ into the work and physically links the painting to the sense of place it reflects. The sand disrupts the surface, creating a dense, textured presence that contrasts with the fluidity of the paint. In this tension, I explore how time, matter, and memory intersect.
I appropriate images from institutional archives and film stills that provide a source of fictional and non-fictional signifiers of humanity’s impulse to explore and preserve. To me, they translate as language through symbols; there is no hierarchy between factual and deceptive, as both portray perception and experience of life. I see them as visual echoes of our desire to reach beyond ourselves to make sense of the inexplicable. The work is not nostalgic but contemplative—a quiet meditation on the sublime, the transience of being, and the fragile threads that bind us to the world.
